SDR - Standard Dynamic Range

• SDR has a relatively narrow range of luminance, covering only 100-1000 nits.

• This means SDR content doesn't have the same contrast between light and dark areas as HDR. Dark scenes appear more gray and lack inky blacks.

• SDR follows the ITU-R BT.709 color specification, covering around 36-45% of the visible color spectrum. Colors can appear less vibrant and lifelike.

• Virtually all content before around 2015 was created in SDR, including DVDs, TV shows, movies and more.

• SDR is supported by nearly all televisions and devices, and has been the standard for decades.

• SDR content is compatible with both SDR and HDR displays. HDR TVs can convert SDR content for better contrast and extended color.

• SDR footage can still look very good on newer displays, just not to the same level as true HDR content.

HDR - High Dynamic Range

• HDR has a much wider luminance range, typically covering 100-10,000 nits and beyond.

• This allows for deeper blacks, higher peaks of brightness, and a significantly wider contrast range between light and dark areas for more realism. Dark scenes can be truly inky black.

• HDR follows expanded color specifications like ITU-R BT.2100 or DCI-P3, covering around 100-135% of the visible color spectrum. Colors appear vivid and accurate.

• Content created from around 2015 onwards has started to adopt HDR, including 4K Blu-rays, Netflix shows, streaming services and newer video games.

• HDR requires a compatible HDR display to fully unlock its benefits. Standard SDR TVs cannot properly display HDR content.

• HDR TVs and monitors are still more expensive than SDR equivalents, though prices have declined in recent years.

• HDR content is compatible with both HDR and SDR displays. However, when played back on an SDR TV, HDR footage is converted and loses some of its advantages.gpu temperature
