How to use Post-Home Button Apple iPhone Ecosystem 2019

How to use Post-Home Button Apple iPhone Ecosystem 2019

Get Used to Gesture Controls

Since the very first iPhone, the Home button has been a key element in navigating the Apple handset. Now that’s it gone, the basic user interface navigation has changed. Here’s how.

First off, you no longer wake up your iPhone with the Home button. Instead, just tap on the device’s display. This is called Tap to Wake — and it works just like it says on the tin.

Similarly, just swipe up from the bottom “home bar” to go to the Home screen after Face ID unlocks your device. This is also how you get “home” from within an app.

No more double-tap to access multitasking. Instead, you’ll want to swipe up from the home bar and hold for a second.

Don’t want to hold? You can also swipe up from the left edge at a 45-degree angle to head straight to the App Switcher every time.

To open the Notification Center, you swipe down from the notch at the top of the display.

To open the Control Center, you’ll want to swipe down from the right edge of the display.

The iPhone XR and iPhone XS Max also support a two-pane landscape view. When you’re in certain native applications, just turn your phone sideways to unlock it.
Unlock the Side Button’s Functionality

Not having a Home button means you’ll also access several non-navigation capabilities slightly differently.

Unlike iPhones with Home buttons, there’s a different way to access Siri. Namely, just press and hold the Side button.

You’ll also access Apple Pay with the Side button. Just double-tap or double-click it to bring up Apple Pay and authenticate with Face ID.

It’s a similar story for screenshots. If you want to take a screenshot, just press the Side button and the Volume Down button simultaneously.

You’ll also get to two really important functions by using the side button: a standard reboot and a hard reset.

To reboot your phone, just hold the Side button and either of the Volume buttons.

A Hard Reset, which is used enabled differently, is especially useful for malfunctioning devices. Here’s how to use it.

Press Volume Up.

Press Volume Down.

Quickly, press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo.
Keep These Face ID Tips in Mind

Killing off the Home button has another side effect: there’s no longer a fingerprint scanner or Touch ID. Because of that, all of your authentication needs will be handled a passcode or Apple’s new Face ID platform.

Sometimes, wearing sunglasses or other face-worn accessories can disrupt Face ID’s accessory. Similarly, you may want to experiment with the distance your face is from the iPhone itself when you’re authenticating.

By default, Face ID requires that you’re actively looking at your iPhone to authenticate. You can change that setting by going to Settings —> Face ID & Passcode and toggling Require Attention for Face ID.

Face ID doesn’t typically fail. But if it does, you don’t have to resort to using your passcode. Just swipe up once after the Face ID failure to try and re-authenticate.

You can also go to Settings —> Face ID & Passcode —> Other Apps to configure which specific third-party apps use Face ID for authentication.

If you’re having trouble with Face ID, try re-registering your face.

iOS 12 has also added the ability to add a second face to Apple’s recognition system. Just go to Settings —> Face ID & Passcode and tap on Set Up an Alternative Appearance. Follow the prompts from there.
Set Up Animoji & Memoji

If you have an iPhone without a Home button, it also means you have an iPhone with a TrueDepth camera. Therefore, you’ll have Animoji and Memoji.

You can get to Animoji or Memoji by:

Opening the Messages app.

Tap on an existing thread or start a new one.

Then, tap on the App Store icon to bring up the app drawer.

Select the Animoji icon (it’ll appear like a monkey head).

From here, you can use the available Animoji.

Alternatively, you can swipe right and tap New Memoji.

Once you create a Memoji, you can use it just like you’d use an Animoji — just swipe left to select it.
If You Really Miss the Home Button…

There are, of course, some people who probably still miss the Home button. If that sounds like you, you can bring back a digitalized version of it.

Just use the following steps.

Open Settings.

Tap on General.

Find and tap on Accessibility.

Then, select AssistiveTouch.

From here, you’ll need to define shortcuts from a single tap, double tap, long press (and 3D Touch if you have the iPhone XS or XS Max).

To get a Home button-like capability out of the feature, just define Single touch as Home.
