How to Download Videos from Google Drive to iPhone
Apple has iCloud, but when it comes to storing data on the cloud for iOS devices, Google Drive is still a great option. In this post, I will show you how to save media files, like videos and photos from Google Drive to your iPhone with ease.
Unlike downloading videos from other websites like Youtube, Twitter, etc… to iPhone and iPad, downloading videos from Google Drive to your Camera Roll is much simpler.
Whether you want to save a video from your own Google Drive, or a video that your friend share with you via a Drive link, here’s how it’s done.
Step 1: Install the Google Drive app on your device.
If you haven’t installed this app yet, then download it now from the App Store. After it’s installed, open it from the home screen and sign in your Google account.
Step 2: Download the video from Google Drive.
If you want to download a video from your Google Drive, simply navigate and locate the video you wish to download.
For videos that are shared by another Google Drive user, you can find it in Menu→ Shared with me. Or you can open the shared link in Safari, then select the “Open in Drive” option.
Once you’ve found the video, tap on the “three vertical dots” icon beside it. The app will bring up a list of options to do with the file. Select “Send a copy”.
The share sheet will appear with an option to save the video. Now tap “Save Video” to download the file to your Camera Roll.
If this is the first time you save a video or a photo from Google Drive to your Photos app, the app will ask for your permission to access and save content to the Photos app. Just tap “Allow” to continue, and the app will start downloading and exporting the file.
Note: The “Save Video” option only works if the video file is supported by iOS (.mp4, .mov, .m4v). For other video formats, they won’t be saved in the Photos app. Instead, you can download and copy the video file to a video player app like VLC Player by using the “Open in” option.
For example, I have a .mkv video on my Drive. When I select “Send a copy” → “Save Video”, the app downloads the file but cannot export the data to the Photos app.
As I have installed VLC Player on my iPhone, I will export the video file to this app instead. From the file menu, select “Open in”. Wait for the file to be downloaded. Then when the Share sheet appears, select “Copy to VLC”. Your video will be copied to the VLC app and you can now play it.

Your video has been saved, and it’s only available in the VLC app.
There is also an option labeled “Available Offline” that lets you save your files for offline use. Drive will download and play the video, but the content is only stored within the app.
If you want to get more control over your content or organize videos in your albums, it’s better to save your files directly to the Photos app.
If you lost any video or photos from iPhone camera roll, you can always use Gihosoft iPhone Data Recovery to get them back.
